“But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?” In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.”
Matthew 26:52-56 NKJV
I am still seeing it today…
“Put your sword in its place.” Was not what the disciples wanted to hear, they were ready for revolution, they were ready for war, but Jesus said no.
This kingdom will not be built on the blood of its enemies it is being built by those who were once enemies… by the love of God that is what changes the way we think (repentance).
Peter put down his sword, not because he wanted to but because Jesus told him too, I’m sure Peter was thinking (ok, now this is getting crazy, the son of man comes to establish the kingdom of heaven and we lay down our weapons?) the answer is YES, lay down your weapons and we are still being asked to lay down our weapons. I have watched some lay down their weapons and never come back In fear , I’ve watched some who continue to hold on to their weapons with a death grip in fear and I’ve seen some who like Peter… realize that the power is in the way Jesus showed us to establish the kingdom (love).
If you are following Jesus you will Be asked or are currently at the place where he is telling you to put your weapon in its place, he fights for you and the Kingdom of Heaven is being established by the God head in the heart of men and women and children through love and intimacy with Yahweh.
Jesus spent his physical time here building the Kingdom this way not sharpening his sword and strategically planning how to overcome the enemy, he knew that His death, burial and resurrection would take care of that for eternity.
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
Ephesians 6:12 NKJV
So… “Put your sword in its place.”
